“black and white destruction”

godzilla (1954)

Ancient legend. Said-to-be extinct creatures. Disaster, depicted in striking black and white images, instantly burned into my retinas.

Can’t say much more about it that hasn’t already been said. I would argue that moving through the series pretty much reverse order allowed the stripped-down, simply horrifying imagery of the original to be even more effective. Everything is a lot easier to take seriously, especially the political scenes (save for Shin. I haven’t seen Minus One yet). No gimmicks, no callbacks, nothing extra. It feels more down to earth, tactile, and thus all the more scary.
