“The platonic ideal of an OVA”
redline (2009)
somehow I’ve avoided seeing this, for whatever reason, for the better part of 13 years or so, though it’s been on my radar the entire time. Koike is a beast, man. I think that “animation” peaked with this movie: every frame is packed with detail and rendered with absurd fidelity. We won’t have something of this scale, this committed to the medium of hand-drawn 2d animation ever again, and that’s okay.
The movie feels like it is the embodiment of the platonic ideal of an OVA. every idea is a home run, and taken to the absolute max. Somehow the stars aligned and it was put to film. I’m so blessed that I was able to see this in a theatre, the sound design and quality shocked me, and helped to elevate the visuals to the intended level
